BANGOR — A former Maine resident has been sentenced in federal court to 18 months in prison for submitting false claims for nearly $50,000 in veterans benefits.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 45-year-old Mark Palmquist of Menominee, Mich., illegally received monthly checks that were intended for a former spouse and child for nearly six years following his divorce, from 2003 to 2009. Authorities say Palmquist submitted a fake letter from the Veterans Affairs Department to back up receipt of the benefits.
Authorities say Palmquist also was convicted of illegally receiving benefits from 2008 to 2011 for an alleged back condition after he created a false document from a Marine Corps detachment commander.
Palmquist was ordered to serve three years of supervised release following his prison term and pay the money back.
