They were there

Ralph and Sheila Berry of Westbrook had an experience of a lifetime last week. They marched right up near the front in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City.

The Berrys were among several employees of Macy’s in South Portland holding lines to steady the balloon “Sonic the Hedgehog,” the first balloon in this year’s 85th annual parade.

“We had a ball,” Ralph Berry said this week after returning home.

The Westbrook couple was at the starting line at 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 24 and walked 21?2 miles in the parade that stepped off at 9 a.m. To cap off the memorable event, they even saw the singer Neil Diamond.

Berry said a million people packed the parade route. “We’ve never seen so many happy people,” he said.
