FREEPORT — The Freeport High School girls basketball team opened its season Friday with a 62- 31 win over North Yarmouth Academy.

Freeport, scheduled to visit Cape Elizabeth on Tuesday, led 18-12, 32-15 and 46-23 at the quarter breaks.

Leigh Wyman led the way with 11 points and nine steals, while Morgan Brown had 10 points, 10 rebounds and a blocked shot, Nina Davenport 11 points, six rebounds and three assists, Alex Mitch six points and Livvy Dimick five points.

Morgan Scully led NYA with nine points and Lillie Reder had six.

In Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference play on Friday, Mt. Ararat rebounded from a 29-14 halftime deficit with a 22-2 third-quarter run to win its opener.

Leah Hitchcock and Chelsey Crawford led the way with 11 points each, while Kristi Willey had 10, Mallory Nelson eight and Caitlin LaFountain six.

Hitchcock also helped out with 14 rebounds, while Nelson had 12 and Willey four assists.

Korry Norcross led the Eddies with 12 points and Kate Sawyer added 10.

The Eagles were 15 of 41 from the field and 20 of 32 from the line, while the Eddies were 17 of 57 from the field and five of seven at the line.

MONMOUTH 40

The visiting Greyhounds nearly erased all of an 11- point deficit, coming up short in a Mountain Valley Conference opener at Monmouth on Friday.

“We were able to get within a point on a three-point play from Bailey Madore, but Monmouth hit a free throw and we missed a last-second shot to win it,” said Lisbon ( 0- 1) coach Julie Wescott, whose squad is slated to host Spruce Mountain tonight at 7 p.m.

The 1-0 Mustangs trailed 11- 8 after a quarter, but jumped ahead 22-17 at the half and 32- 26 after 24 minutes.

Lisbon’s Jess Campbell led all scorers with 12 points, while Madore chipped in 11. The Greyhounds struggled from the foul line, going just four- of- 11 from the charity stripe. Denise Thomas added seven points.

Brianna Hicks led a balanced Monmouth attack with 11 points, while Kristine Kahl added seven.

“A lot of good things came out of this game, even though it stinks to lose, but we played hard and will hopefully be able to pick up a win,” added Wescott.

WISCASSET 43

In MVC action Friday night, Mountain Valley outscored host Wiscasset 15-4 in the third period en route to a win.

Mountain Valley led 10- 8 after one quarter and the teams were tied 18-18 at intermission.

Kayla Connors led Wiscasset, which is slated to visit Boothbay today, with 18 points and Heidi Pinkham added 10.

For Mountain Valley, Ayla Allen popped in 20 points and Brooke Dolloff had 12 points.

Wiscasset was helped at the foul line, making 19 of 26 attempts.

BRUNSWICK 41

Cony built up a 20- point lead and the Rams had to hold off Brunswick down the stretch in the KVAC opener for both teams.

After a 6-6 first-quarter tie, Cony led 24-13 at the half and 40-28 heading into the final stanza.

Josie Lee paced the Rams with 13 points, and Melanie Guzman had a dozen points and a like number of rebounds.

Lyse Henshaw paced the Dragons, scheduled to host Lawrence on Tuesday, with 12 points, while Liz Faulkner added 10, and Lauren Carlton and Becky Champagne seven each.

Richmond overcame some early jitters and posted a season opening East-West Conference win on Saturday.

The Bobcats, scheduled to host Buckfield on Tuesday, led 4-2, 17-11 and 32-15 at the quarter breaks.

“I think it was opening-day jitters,” said Richmond coach Molly Bishop. “We couldn’t catch the ball to save our lives.”

Jamie Plummer paced Richmond with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Danica Hurley had eight points, and Alyssa Pearson and Ciarra Lancaster seven each. Bri Snedeker chipped in with 11 rebounds.

Ruth Towne led Seacoast with eight points.

At the foul line, Richmond was four of eight and Seacoast eight of 14.
