TOPSHAM — The Topsham Parks and Recreation Department held its annual “Hot Shot” competition at Mt. Ararat Middle School on Wednesday.

Winners are eligible to participate in the Regional competition, sponsored by the Bath Recreation Department, on March 4 at the Bath Middle School gym at 10 a.m.

In the 9-10 boys, Hunter Lohr scored 109 points to take the top spot, ahead of runner-up Caleb Manuel, who finished with 85 points.

Theresa Breed paced the 9-10 girls with 84 points, ahead of second-place finisher Alexa Eaton’s 56 points, while in the 11-12 girls competition, Caitlyn Smith picked up 75 points to lead the way, with Lauren Sturgess (61 points) in second.

Austin Damon won the 11-12 boys with 58 points, edging past Benjamin Hickerson’s 43 points.

Jacob Sturgess took home the 13-15 boys title with 66 points, while Nikki Bradstreet had 95 points to win the 13-15 girls’ competition.

AUGUSTA — The Brunswick High School boys basketball team competed in the Capital City Hoop Classic at the Augusta Civic Center on Tuesday, falling to Gardiner and Lawrence in a pair of 57-50 contests.

Against Gardiner, the Dragons led 29-26 at the half, but the Tigers battled back to take a 34-32 lead through 24 minutes.

Konnor Scarponi paced Brunswick with 13 points, while Ryan Black and Garrett Erb added seven points each. Aarom Tomer led Gardiner with 15 points.

Next up was Lawrence, and once again the Dragons led at the half, 24- 20. Brunswick maintained its four-point lead through three quarters, 36-32, but the Bulldogs outscored the Dragons 25-14 in the fourth to pull away.

Elliot Boyd had a game-high 13 points for Brunswick, with Mitch Black chipping in nine points and Scarponi seven.

Spencer Carey had 12 points to lead Lawrence, with Keith Chesley adding 11.

Gardiner won the championship, downing Dirigo 60-48.

Brunswick (4-2) returns to action tonight with a key Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference contest at Lewiston (4-1). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
