The Portland Museum of Art showcases its collection of celebrity portraits in the exhibition “Making Faces: Photographic Portraits of Actors and Artists.” On view through April 8, the show features 35 black-and-white portraits of recognizable TV personalities and famous artists.
The exhibition reveals the ways in which appearances, poses and props help define the public perception of an artist and his or her work.
The bulk of the images on view are from two newly acquired portfolios of work by Berenice Abbott and Robert Doisneau, as well as Philippe Halsman and Imogene Coca. Among the artists portrayed are Lucille Ball, Jimmy Durante, Andy Warhol, Andrew Wyeth and Robert Indiana.
