BATH — An automated teller machine at Savings Bank of Maine in the Bath Shopping Center was vandalized overnight Tuesday, but no cash was stolen, police said this morning.

The machine, located near the building but not attached to it, sustained an estimated $2,000 to $3,000 damage, Bath Police Lt. Stan Cielinski said today.

Police responded at 12:27 a.m. today to an alarm on the machine, but when officers arrived, they found no one in the area.

The culprit or culprits “weren’t able to get in, and there was no money missing,” Cielinski said, noting that a “large tool” was used in the attempt to access the machine.

Officials from the bank subsequently emptied the ATM, and Bath police officers are reviewing video and following up on leads, Cielinski said.
