BOSTON — Senior guard John Sewall of Bath drilled a long-range 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to deliver the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 72- 71 win over the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston.

Snapping a six-game losing streak, the Huskies improved to 7-8 and earned their first conference win to move to 1-5. The loss is the third straight for the Beacons, who fell to 5- 11 and 1-5 in the LEC.

With the score tied at 69, the Beacons received an elbow- jumper from Vinny DeLucia to snag a 71-69 lead.

The Huskies quickly inbounded the ball and brought it up the floor. Sewall found the Huskies’ hot hand, Chris Pagentine on the wing as time ran down. Quickly swarmed by the Beacon defense, Pagentine passed the ball out of trouble back to Sewall, who nailed a trey as the time expired.

Sewall played 11 minutes with four rebounds and six points, while junior guard Alex Kee of Bath tossed in 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

USM hosts LEC rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (3 p.m.).
