Cancer support workshops

The Cancer Community Center is offering two talks this week.

Dawn Pelletier Stratton, a licensed counselor and cancer survivor, will give a talk “Living with Uncertainty,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Center, 778 Main St.

People will learn ways to handle the fears, anxieties, and stress that stems from having a cancer history.

Dr. Christine Maguire will give  another talk about fighting the winter blues from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Free winterization courses

Southern Maine Community College is offering a free weatherization courses to help ease the burden of the Maine winter.

The workshops will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 28 at SMCC’s Sustainable Energy Alternatives Center on the South Portland campus.

Students will learn how heat escapes houses and what cost-effective measures maximize energy efficiency. Participants will learn tips and techniques to insulate their homes using basic weatherization materials. People will learn low-cost ways to reduce their energy consumption by up to 25 percent.

Southern Maine Agency on Aging is teaming up with MaineHealth to offer a six-week workshop, Living Well for Better Health.

The workshops are designed for people with ongoing health conditions and their care partners.

The workshops will held from 9:30 a.m. to noon from Wednesday through Feb. 29 at the MaineHealth Learning Resource Center, 5 Bucknam Road.

College financial aid help

College Goal Maine, offered by Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), will be held at various locations during January and early February.

Financial aid professionals from Maine colleges and universities, along with other volunteers, will help college-bound students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The form is required for federal and state financial aid. Attendees should bring copies of their most recent tax information, such as completed IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 statements and other income and benefits information.

Saint Joseph’s College is launching its 100th Anniversary on Tuesday with a lecture on how language keeps changing.

Winter gardening workshop

The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust is offering a series of six workshops on vegetable gardening this winter.

The first workshop, taught by master gardener Linton Studdiford, will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 27 Pleasant St. in Brunswick.

Studdiford will talk about which vegetables grow well in Maine, when and how to plant, hybrid and heirloom varieties; and sources of seeds.

Farmers’ Network event

The York County Farmers’ Network will hold an event on Tuesday to bring together farmers and farmer’s market managers to develop ideas and ways to make their products more visible in the community.

This year’s forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Anderson Learning Center, 21 Bradeen St.

There will be a potluck supper at 5:30 p.m. for any interested attendees.

Sell outdated gold and silver

The Beachmere Inn will host an event on Sunday for people to sell their outdated or unused gold and silver items to raise money for the Marginal Way Preservation Fund.

The Party of Gold buy-back event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at 62 Beachmere Place.

Your gold and silver will be weighed and evaluated. Party of Gold will then make a 15 percent donation from its profits.
