Thanks to an anonymous donation, the Celebration Barn Theater is expanding its summer intensive from two to four weeks and making it easier for one lucky Mainer to attend.

The theater in South Paris offers a full season of workshops and performances to spur the development of new theater. This summer, the Barn will expand its Intensive Workshop into a month-long immersion with master teachers Davis Robinson, Karen Montanaro and guests. The program runs July 2-28.

In addition, it is offering a scholarship for one Maine student.

“This is a big shift in our programming,” said executive director Amanda Huotari. “For years, the Barn has been running one- and two-week workshops. This is a big investment in developing new work.”

Huotari said the expansion has been on the Barn’s wish list for some time.

“There has been demand for it, but we have always needed an outside resource to make it possible,” she said. “So this was a fantastic time for those resources to become available.”

The tuition for the month-long intensive is valued at about $1,500. It does not include housing and meals.

The Intensive Workshop will push artists with classes in movement, improvisation, premise work, physical graphics and principles of ensemble building. There will be master classes with guest teachers, and students will be encouraged to create and perform new work.

“Each week will lead to new challenges and increasing levels of risk and collaboration. We will use the natural world surrounding the Barn, music, literature, current events and the human condition to devise original material in groups, solo and duets,” Robinson said in a new release.

The application deadline for the scholarship is May 1. Applicants for the Maine Emerging Artist Scholarship must be first-time Barn students, Maine residents or Maine college students, and be at least 18 years old.

To apply, submit a registration form along with a headshot, resume and a letter of introduction to Mandy@CelebrationBarn.com.
