NYA Robotics team off to worlds

BANGOR — The VEX Robotics team at North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) qualified to attend the VEX World Championships taking place April 18 to 21 in Anaheim, Calif.

The invitation is based on their performance in the programming skills challenge at the New England Championships in Worcester, Mass., in early March. The team is currently raising funds for the trip.

Teams from all around the world will be in Anaheim, including from Singapore, New Zealand, Cyprus, Malaysia, Mexico, El Salvador, China and Canada.

Sophomore Austin Kidder of Topsham is the only Mid-coast resident on the squad. He’s joined by freshmen Muriel Adams, Anna Bilodeau, Rhiannon Ramsey-Brimberg, Will Coleman and Ben Ford; juniors Ben Claytor, Matt Hawkins and Katherine Roche; and senior Phong Ho.

Each year, VEX International teams across the world are given a challenge. Over the course of the year, teams design, build, program, test and refine an autonomous and tele-operated robot capable of completing the VEX competition using VEX robotics kit technology.

In December, NYA competed in the Southern Maine competition at the University of Southern Maine, and in February, traveled to Bangor for the states championships where the team earned the Design Award. On March 3, they competed in the New England Championships. The team ranked 39th out of 250 teams worldwide in the programming skills category, according to advisor Deb Adams.

“Robotics at NYA is a genuine experiential education program. Students learn by designing, building, programming (using the C programming language) and operating a competitive robot intended to complete a VEX designed task,” said Adams.
