PORTLAND (AP) — The Portland Ice Arena has been shut down until Labor Day for major repairs to the ice rink.

The city will make $625,000 in repairs including replacing the heating and chilling loops beneath the ice, the pumps and compressors and the chilling and heating units.

The Portland Press Herald reports leaks in the heating system cause bumps in the middle of the ice and a slant in the floor near a door to the ice rink.

The city manager said the project will be largely funded by the city’s energy efficiency bond.

The Portland Ice Arena is home to a figure skating program and several school hockey teams including Portland, Cheverus, South Portland and Cape Elizabeth.
