PORTLAND — Portland police said a woman was stabbed at about 1:30 p.m. on Cedar Street in downtown Portland.

An officer at the scene declined to identify the male assailant. Lt. Gary Rogers said no arrest would be made on Wednesday night and an investigation would continue.

The woman, whose injuries were serious, was in stable condition and transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment. She was not identified.

Cedar Street was the scene of a dramatic six-hour standoff Saturday between a gunman and the Portland police.

In that incident, at 19 Cedar St., Brian Kelley, 48, allegedly shot a woman on the street with a pellet gun. The unidentified woman was treated and released from Maine Medical Center.

Kelley has been charged with elevated aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and faces civil penalties for creating the long and expensive standoff. He remains at the Cumberland County Jail on $100,000 cash bail.
