PORTLAND – A woman was stabbed Wednesday on Cedar Street at about 1:30 p.m., according to police.

An officer at the scene said the assailant was male but would not say whether he was known to the victim or give details on the motive.

Portland Police Lt. Gary Rogers said no arrest would be made Wednesday night and that police were still investigating.

The woman, whose injuries were serious, was in stable condition and transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment, Rogers said. The woman was not identified.

Police are interviewing witnesses to the stabbing, which took place outside 9 Cedar St., in the city’s Bayside neighborhood, Rogers said.

On Saturday, Cedar Street was the scene of a dramatic six-hour standoff between a gunman and Portland police.

In that incident, at 19 Cedar St., Brian Kelley, 48, allegedly shot a woman on the street with a pellet gun. The unidentified woman was treated and released from Maine Medical Center.

Kelley has been charged with elevated aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and faces civil penalties for instigating the long and expensive standoff. He remains at the Cumberland County Jail on $100,000 cash bail.
