Members of the Nonesuch Service Unit were presented with the prestigious Girl Scout President’s Award at the Girl Scouts of Maine Annual Meeting on April 21 at the Elks Lodge in Waterville. The Nonesuch Service Unit represents the towns of Gorham, Scarborough, and Westbrook.

The Girl Scout President’s Award recognizes a Service Unit Team that has moved the geographic area they serve toward the achievement of specific council goals.

Throughout 2010 and 2011, the Nonesuch Service Unit met a broad array of criteria and team members distinguished themselves by creating innovative programs and events that resulted in an impressive member retention rate of 88 percent. Of the 55 troops, with nearly 600 girl members, almost 54 percent spring registered for another year of Girl Scouting.

In addition to event programming, the Nonesuch team offered various community service opportunities for girls including their long-standing award, Troop Challenge. That year, a record 17 troops earned a Troop Challenge ribbon.

The Nonesuch Service Unit was also recognized for its effective communications, which included utilizing Yahoo, groups for their Juliette email account, and troop mailboxes. These easily accessible means of exchange increased leader and girl involvement and contributed to the unit’s high recruitment and retention rates.
