BRUNSWICK – Annie Clark scored the go-ahead goal Wednesday as Brunswick scored the final five goals to beat Cony 8-6 in a schoolgirl lacrosse regular-season finale.

Cony (9-3) trailed 3-1 before scoring three times in the last three minutes of the half, then scored twice to take a 6-3 lead with 16:59 remaining.

Brunswick Coach Beth Caputi then called a timeout. “Their zone defense carries their team, and I told the girls they had to work harder to create space. They couldn’t be lazy, and we had to attack more on defense and try to create turnovers.”

Clark then took a Lillian Kjellman feed on a fast break and ripped a low shot that trickled in off the stick of goalie Katrina Duncan 1:20 after play resumed.

Two minutes later, Corinne O’Connor, from behind the net, fed Suzannah Smith in front, and Smith also went low to make it 6-5.

Brunswick goalie Molly Herman followed with a point-blank save on Chelsea Begin, and shortly after started another fast break with a sharp pass to Clark.

Clark passed ahead to Kjellman charging down the right side, and Kjellman tied it with another low shot.

Duncan came up with a pair of nice saves off Clark and Jen Machin as the Dragons (11-1) continued to press, but O’Connor spotted Clark coming around behind the net and hit her just as she broke to the left post.

Clark converted from the near side, and Brunswick had the lead with 3:21 left.

“We never doubted we could do it because we had been possessing very well,” said Clark. “We had been patient and had been slowing it down, but we knew we can’t win if we don’t score so we had to take it to the goal.

“We had to recognize our opportunities.”

The Dragons kept possession for most of the rest of the game and with 1:05 to go, Smith cut to the net from the left side and scored again.
