SOUTH PORTLAND — A South Carolina man remains in critical condition at Maine Medical Center after crashing his motorcycle on the Veterans Memorial Bridge in South Portland earlier Thursday.

Sgt. Adam Howard said witnesses told police the 39-year-old victim was seen using the breakdown lane to pass several cars on the on-ramp to the Veterans Memorial Bridge when he lost control.

Howard said the rider’s bike dragged along the guardrail for about 100 feet before he was thrown off the motorcycle. He landed on the Interstate 295 on-ramp while his bike remained on the Veterans Memorial Bridge ramp.

It took police several hours to identify the man, who had no personal papers or a driver’s license on him. The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered severe injuries to his head and to his arm, Howard said.

“He has been in surgery since the accident and he is in critical condition,” Howard said.

Police are not going to identify the rider until his parents have been notified. The accident took place around 3:30 p.m.

Howard said it appears that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
