PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Demolition work is in the homestretch of the former Memorial Bridge that had connected New Hampshire and Maine.

The bridge had connected Portsmouth, N.H., to Kittery, Maine, for nearly 90 years. A new bridge will be built by next year.

The Kittery approach has been demolished down to the pier footings. Contractor Archer Western says from now until the end of the fall, the river view will show only the four stubs of piers above the waterline.

Demolition work is continuing on two piers in the center of the Piscataqua River.

Crews have started work on the new foundation.
