AUGUSTA – Applications for the 2012 any-deer (antlerless) permit lottery are available online from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

A total of 34,160 any-deer permits will be issued in 13 of the state’s 29 wildlife management districts for this year’s whitetail deer huting season, which beings in late October. It is bucks only in all other wildlife management districts.

Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15. Paper applications may be submitted in person or by mail no later than July 27. To apply online go to mefishwildlife.com. The Department no longer mails paper applications.

It is free to apply for the any-deer permit lottery. The drawing will be held on Sept. 7.

The 13 wildlife management districts where antlerless deer may be hunted this year, with a permit, are 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 29.

Deer hunting season (firearms) begins with Youth Deer Hunting Day on Oct. 20. Youth may take a buck statewide or an antlerless deer only in the wildlife management districts where any-deer permits will be issued this fall.

This year, Maine Residents Only Day is on Saturday, Oct. 27, and deer season runs Oct. 29 through Nov. 24.
