PORTLAND (AP) — Four Maine towns are getting federal grants totaling $625,000 to bolster their police ranks.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services has awarded a $250,000 grant to the York Police Department. Departments in Cumberland, Madison and Yarmouth are getting $125,000 each.

In announcing the grants, U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins said the awards will provide 75 percent of salary and benefits for entrylevel officers over a threeyear period. The funds can also be used to rehire officers who have been laid off or are scheduled to be laid off because of local budget cuts.
