LEWISTON — A 19-year-old woman accused of being drunk, driving too fast and texting at the time of a crash that killed two passengers in Maine has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Kristina Lowe entered her pleas Tuesday in Oxford County Superior court.

Police say Lowe was driving 75 mph, had been drinking and smoking pot, and was texting on her cellphone when she crashed in West Paris shortly after midnight on Jan. 7.

An affidavit said a blood test indicated Lowe had marijuana in her system and that she admitted to police she was driving and texting at the time of the crash.

The Sun Journal says her attorney, James Howaniec, denies she was drunk or texting. Howaniec says Lowe lost control of the car on a patch of ice.
