FALMOUTH — John Logan Jones, 26, is the new Republican candidate for the Maine House of Representatives in District 112, which covers most of Falmouth.

The Republican Town Committee last week selected Jones to replace nominee Patricia Kirby, who withdrew from the race because of concerns about a heart condition.

In the November election, Jones will face Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary P. Nelson, D-Falmouth, who has held the seat since 2008.

This is the first time Jones has sought elected office.

He is a 2004 graduate of Falmouth High School, and a U.S. Air Force veteran who served as a linguist in Afghanistan. Last year, he worked as a field staffer for former GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Jones said his experience in the military and as a campaign activist has shaped his political opinions.

“I’ve been flabbergasted by the waste in government,” he said. “My goal in the House will be to restore local control, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. I think the people who should be making decisions are the ones who are most directly affected by them.”

Jones also will serve as one of the 24 elected Maine delegates participating in the Republican National Convention next month in Tampa, Fla.
