AUGUSTA (AP) — A Maine National Guard colonel who served recently in Afghanistan is Gov. Paul LePage’s choice to become the state’s adjutant general.

In announcing Col. James Campbell’s nomination on Tuesday, LePage said Campbell “has distinguished himself as a soldier and a scholar” and is the right man to lead the Maine Guard. The adjutant general is the supreme military officer of the state and serves as commissioner of Defense, Veterans’ and Emergency Management.

Campbell joined the Maine Army National Guard in 1995 following nine years of active duty service.

Campbell’s nomination is subject to legislative review and confirmation by the Senate.
