PORTLAND — Shoppers at Whole Foods Market in Portland helped Maine Audubon raise approximately $7,850 in a single day.

On designated days, Whole Foods Market donates 5 percent of the day’s net sales to a selected charitable organization. Since opening in February 2007, Whole Foods Market in Portland has donated more than $120,000 to Maine nonprofits and schools through 5 Percent Days alone.

The most recent such day, June 19, marked the highest amount ever raised for a Maine-based nonprofit, according to Barbara Gulino, who serves as marketing team leader for Whole Foods Market’s Portland store.

“One of our core values is to support the environment and sustainable agriculture,” Gulino said. “And so the mission of Whole Foods Market and that of Maine Audubon are in perfect alignment.”

Officials from both organizations were recently on hand for the ceremonial check presentation. Ted Koffman, Maine Audubon’s executive director, said the amount exceeded his expectations.

“We had forecast, based on past results of this program, that if it netted us somewhere between five and six thousand dollars we’d have been very happy,” said Koffman. “But to then learn we almost reached eight thousand, and that it set a record for the Portland store, is just fantastic.”
