PHIPPSBURG — Friends of Seguin Island Lighthouse is hosting its first Seguin Island Art Exhibit at the island’s museum attached to Maine’s tallest and second oldest lighthouse.

There will be an opening event on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibit and sale will run through the annual Maine Open Lighthouse Day on Sept. 15.

Twenty-five artists will exhibit and sell their works of Seguin Island in oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels. Local artists include Martha Baum, Mary Brooking and Claudette Gamache. Proceeds will go toward the preservation and maintenance of Seguin Island and its historic lighthouse.

Seguin Island Light is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Commissioned by George Washington in 1795, it continues to be a fully functional aid to navigation. The island is located 2.5 miles from the mouth of the Kennebec River in Mid-coast Maine. It covers 64 acres and rises 140 feet above the sea. Accessible only by private boat or by ferry from several places along the coast, visitors come ashore to hike the island trails, climb the lighthouse, visit the museum, meet the keepers and take in the 360 degree views.

The island and lighthouse is open to all at no charge from May to October, though there is a fee for the ferry service. Five moorings are available.

MSMT auction runs through Aug. 4

BRUNSWICK — Maine State Music Theatre is holding its 12th annual silent and online auction to coincide with “Sunset Boulevard,” which runs through Aug. 4.

Each year many artists, craftsman, retailers and individual supporters of MSMT donate items to the auction that are up for bid as a fundraiser for the theater. The auction, which benefits MSMT, includes more than 150 items, including Giclee prints by Brunswick artist Alice Treworgy and a sculptural piece called “24 Common Spikes” made of forged steel by John Bisbee.

Items are exclusive to each portion of the auction. A photographic preview of much of the artwork being featured in the silent auction can be previewed on the MSMT website under the heading “Support MSMT.” The silent auction is held in the lower lobby of the Pickard Theater at 1 Bath Road on the Bowdoin College campus. Bidding for the silent auction takes place in person, at the theater, during each performance of “Sunset Boulevard” and during normal box office hours (Mondays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to evening intermission and Sundays noon to intermission).
