THE SHANGHAI QUARTER performs tonight at part of Festival Fridays.

BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin International Music Festival will feature Shanghai Quartet during its Festival Fridays concert today. The quartet will perform Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15 in their first 2012 Bowdoin Festival appearance.

The program will also feature faculty ensembles led by Renee Jolles and Muneko Otani. The concert takes place at Crooker Theater, Brunswick High School, at 7:30 p.m.

According to a news release from the festival, Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15 is one of the late works commissioned in 1822 by Russian prince Nicholas Galitzin, an amateur cellist. Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, the Shanghai Quartet has worked with the world’s most distinguished artists and regularly tours the major music centers of Europe, North America and Asia, from the Beijing International Music Festival to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

Joining Jolles, concertmaster of the Orpheus Chamber Players, in the Brandenburg Concerto are Janet Sung and Yang Xu on violin; James Zhang, flute; Diana Koo, oboe; Rich Kelley, piccolo trumpet; Jesus Rodriguez Gonzalez, viola; Kurt Muroki, double bass; and Tao Lin, harpsichord.

Otani, first violin of the Cassatt String Quartet, will lead Xu, violists Dimitri Murrath and Caroline Coade, and cellist David Requiro in the Brahms quintet, also known as the Prater Quintet.

Tickets for Festival Fridays concerts are $40. For more information, call 725-3895 or visit www.bowdoinfestival.org.
