PORTLAND — Maine writer Christina Solak-Goodwin will read from her memoir, “Battling Bipolar Disorder,” at Portland Public Library at noon on Aug. 3 as part of the library’s free Friday Local Author Series.

Solak-Goodwin was 26 years old and a licensed mental health professional when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. According to a news release, “Battling Bipolar Disorder” chronicles the pain, despair and hopelessness of a woman suffering from mental illness for 17 years.

The first-person, presenttense story recounts 11 suicide attempts, multiple failed medication trials, electric shock treatments and numerous psychiatric hospitalizations.
