Scout achieves Eagle rank

Matthew Cushing, who will be a senior at Cheverus High School this fall, was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Cushing’s service project was replacement of a decaying bridge on the Tote Road Trail at Bradbury State Park in Pownal. His project included a design of the bridge, fundraising, finding volunteers, and supervising demolition of the old bridge and construction of the new one.

Only 5 percent of Scouts attain the highest rank. An Eagle Scout must have completed at least 21 merit badges and organized a service project that benefits his church, community or school.

SCARBOROUGH

SAT prep course to start

Maine Prep’s SAT preparation course for high school students in the Scarborough area will begin Aug. 14 at St. Maximilian Church, 150 Black Point Road. Classes meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Oct. 2.

The eight-session course is designed to teach students strategies to use in the math, writing and reading sections of the SAT. It will prepare high school seniors for the Oct. 6 SAT and juniors for the PSAT. For more information, call 798-5690.

Grant helps hospice

Hospice of Southern Maine recently received an $8,500 grant from the Hospice Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.

This gift will support its third annual hospice conference and volunteer program.

Spring Point light open

The Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is open to visitors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays this month. The lighthouse, located off Fort Road on the campus of Southern Maine Community College, is the only caisson-style lighthouse in America that is accessible by land and open for public tours.

HomeHealth Visiting Nurses has been awarded two one-year grants totaling $92,462 from United Way of Greater Portland.

Those investments will support charity care for adults and children who need home health services but lack insurance and/or financial resources to pay for necessary care.

College courses offered

The Biddeford Regional Center of Technology and Southern Maine Community College are partnering to offer first-year college courses beginning Aug. 28 at the center at 10 Maplewood Ave.

Afternoon and evening courses will be offered in college composition, algebra and introduction to psychology. Interested high school students may be eligible for free tuition and dual enrollment in conjunction with their high school studies.

EAST MACHIAS

Fog bell photos sought

Tim Harrison of Lighthouse Digest is seeking photographs documenting the moving of the former fog bell at Petit Manan Lighthouse to the Milbridge Elementary School more than a century ago.

The date on the bell is said to be worn off, but it is believed to have been made in 1855 by the McShane Bell Foundry in Baltimore. The bell was used at the lighthouse until 1869.

It is not known what year the bell was given to the school for display. Harrison hopes someone has photos of that event in an old album tucked away in an attic.
