PORTLAND – Mayor Michael Brennan met with about 20 constituents Friday on Peaks Island, where the talk focused on public safety, noise from jets and his first year as Portland’s full-time mayor.
“I’ve gotten to meet the president and gotten to meet Mumford & Sons,” Brennan told the islanders. “I doubt I’ll be able to match that next year.”

Brennan said there are signs that the city’s economy is starting to bounce back from the recession, with development projects worth about $250 million in the works and the city’s unemployment rate running below the state and national averages. He said the city’s most pressing need is good-paying jobs that will attract younger Maine natives back to the area after college.
Residents said they want more information on public safety on the island. One complained that airlines that fly into and out of the Portland International Jetport are being directed to fly over the island, causing noise and pollution problems. Airport officials are scheduled to meet with islanders to discuss the issue later this month.
Brennan said he scheduled Friday’s meeting to coincide with a friend’s wedding on Peaks Island later in the afternoon. He promised to hold another meeting at a time that’s likely to draw more islanders.
