KENNEBUNK — Synthetic stimulants known as “bath salts” will be the topic of a lecture next month.

The lecture will take place at 6 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Kennebunk High School auditorium. The event is organized by the Kennebunk Police Department in conjunction with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency.

Bath salts can contain the stimulant mephedrone and the psychoactive drug methylenedioxypyrovalerone, or MDPV. Poison control centers say the effects include hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rate, seizures and kidney dysfunction.

The drugs have been popular in Europe for a number of years but have become available more recently in the United States.
