KITTERY — A Kittery man, who left work and decided to go for a swim in the Piscataqua River, had to be rescued by authorities Thursday afternoon.

Chief Randy Bucklin of the United States Coast Guard station in South Portland said the man jumped off the old Memorial Bridge between Kittery and Portsmouth, N.H., but got swept away by currents in the river.

Bucklin said the Coast Guard was notified about the incident at 4:45 p.m. and sent a crew to the scene where the man was found clinging to a buoy. A boat from the New Hampshire Marine Patrol rescued the swimmer, who was not injured.

Channel 8 Television in Portland identified the man as 22-year-old Morgan Moreau of Kittery. The station also reported that the man went swimming in the clothes he had worn to work.
