SOUTH PORTLAND — Crews from the Portland Water District are repairing a water main break on Broadway that damaged nearby businesses last night.

The break occurred around 7 p.m. Thursday in the area of 724 Broadway. Traffic is reduced to one lane in front of Events on Broadway. Police said motorists should expect significant delays.

Tom Howard, owner of J.P. Thornton’s Bar and Grille, said he had to evacuate about 60 customers last night when water began pouring into the restaurant.

“It was literally a river,” he said Friday while he waited for health inspectors to arrive.

Howard said there was at least 2 inches of standing water in the restaurant. He had to throw away take-out orders customers could not pick up and he said he will have to replace the new carpets in the restaurant.

Greener Postures Yoga was also damaged by the water.

Crews hope to have the break repaired and the road reopened by 3 p.m.
