SCARBOROUGH – A Portland man has been arrested after he attempted to run down a trooper along the Maine Turnpike late Saturday afternoon.

Matthew Cole, 23, is charged with eluding a police officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Trooper Kyle Wells attempted to pull over Cole’s car for an expired registration, but the car sped off and short time later lost control at exit 42 in Scarborough and went off the roadway, the release said. As Wells was outside his cruiser, Cole’s car began backing up toward him and the trooper fired at the vehicle. Cole was not injured and was taken into custody, and is now at the Cumberland County Jail.

As is standard procedure, Maine State Police placed the Wells on administrative leave with pay as the incident is investigated. Because the shooting involved a police officer, the Maine Attorney General’s Office is the investigating agency.
