A 25-year-old California man suffering from hypothermia was treated and released at a Brunswick hospital after his boat capsized near Lookout Point in Middle Bay on Saturday afternoon.

The Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Office announced Saturday night it assisted Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard in responding to the distressed boater call, reported at 5:25 p.m. at Lookout Point in Middle Bay. The sheriff ’s department reported that 25-year-old John Alexander Eckhouse, of Sherman Oaks, Calif., had been out in a 14-foot Boston Whaler sailboat that had overturned.

“Eckhouse was stranded in the water and was near drowning when his screams for help were heard,” the press release stated. “Eckhouse was rescued by fisherman in the area and brought to shore.”

Eckhouse, who was transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, was listed in stable condition, and was suffering from a severe case of hypothermia. He was later treated and released the same day, according to a hospital spokesman.
