Joel Rogers has been hired as the girls’ basketball coach at Greely High in Cumberland.
He will be the Rangers’ third coach in three years, replacing Kim Hilbrich, who led Greely to a 17-4 record and a spot in the Western Class B final in her only season.
“He really impressed the committee,” said Athletic Director David Shapiro. “He has a significant amount of experience in a number of different programs. He has great basketball knowledge.
“He wanted to really be in the Western Maine Conference. And he really wanted to be at Greely.”
Rogers, 54, was an assistant girls’ coach at Greely in the 2010-11 season under Bill Goodman.
Rogers coached the Portland High boys’ freshman team last year.
He previously applied for head coaching positions at Falmouth and Yarmouth, but is glad to settle in at Greely.
“I know the girls,” he said. “I like the level of play. And this team is going to have great senior leadership coming back.
“Everything I do will be in the best interest of the players. My focus won’t be on what the parents think, my focus will be on what the kids need.”
Goodman, now the head coach at McAuley, said Rogers will be good for the program.
“He’s a good guy who loves basketball,” said Goodman.
