AUGUSTA — The Maine Public Broadcasting Network is looking at expanded State House coverage that could resemble the national C-SPAN.

The new venture awaits final funding approval by the MPBN board of directors and an OK by legislative leadership before it can be launched next year.

The MPBN State House TV channel would be devoted exclusively to coverage of the Legislature and government affairs.

MPBN says that initially, the State House channel would not have the variety of programming that cable television viewers have come to associate with C-SPAN. But over time, it could become a homegrown state version of the national network – a sort of MESPAN.

Mal Leary, owner of Capitol News Service, will oversee the operations of MPBN’s new State House channel.
