This Christmas season has opened with a miracle – Schoolhouse Arts Center in Standish is presenting “Miracle on 34th Street.”

This is a classic story about the importance of believing in something that logic tells you is impossible. It is the tale of a little girl in New York City who is convinced to believe in a kindly old man who thinks that he is Santa Claus, in spite of her logical and rational upbringing.

Director Michael Hjort has added some twists to the story to make it even more fun for the kids and surprising for the adults.

The production opens with a brief prelude that showcases the talents of some of the actors from the play. It climaxes with dynamite renditions of “In the Bleak Mid-Winter,” by Tom Ferrent (Kris Kringle), and “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” performed by Ashley McBreairty (Dutch Girl). The production that follows includes several musical numbers, dance routines, a troop of elves with attitudes, and a cast of local talent ranging in age from 6 to 68.

There are only three more performances being presented on Dec. 14, 15, and 16. For Friday and Saturday performances the curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. On Sundays, the show is a matinee at 2. Tickets are $14 for adults and $12 for seniors and students.

Schoolhouse Arts Center is located at 16 Richville Road (Route 114) in Standish, just north of the intersection of Route 114 and Route 35. Call 642-3743 for reservations or order tickets online at www.schoolhousearts.org.
