As of this morning the entire state of Maine has seen at least some snow with many areas poised to receive over a foot before this ends later this afternoon and early evening. I would say Portland has now received its permanent snow cover for the winter.   I had a report from Saco that they have gotten over half a foot as of 8 AM.  Right now our storm is just south of Cape Cod and will be moving northeast passing Maine later this evening.  Once the center of the storm goes by your particular town the precipitation will come to an end.

Snowfall rates will increase in intensity this morning from south to north with the heaviest snow falling in the foothills and mountains during the late morning and afternoon.  You could see 1-2 inches of snow in an hour in some of the heavier bands that occur.

The mix-rain line is trying to push inland and northward and southern York county is seeing mostly liquid precipitation this morning.  Temperatures are above freezing there and even as close as a few miles off the coast of Portland.  Bands of snow continue to rotate in from the east as you can se on this radar loop.  As I mentioned yesterday, snowfall amounts will dramatically increase the further north and west you go away from the ocean, especially near the mid-coast.  Coastal towns may flip back and forth from rain to snow until ending as all snow later this afternoon and evening. Just a few miles will make a huge difference especially on some of the fingers of land that jut southward. 

When all is said and done a wide swath of 12 to 18 inches of snow is a good bet across much of southern and central Maine.  The exceptions will be those coastal areas and the southern part of York county where amounts will range from a slushy inch or two to 8 inches.

Friday looks typical for late December with partial sunshine, breezy and cold conditions as highs remain in the middle 30s.  There will be some melting on the roads tomorrow making for a sloppy drive everywhere.

For the weekend we will watch another storm threaten, but most likely stay south the area. However there is still enough of a question as to the track of the storm that it is possible southern areas see more snow early Sunday morning so stay tuned.
