Girls’ basketball: Cony Coach Karen Magnusson informed her players last week that she is stepping down to take care of the baby she’s expecting in August. Magnusson said she intends to return to coaching, but for now her family comes first.

Magnusson came to Cony five years ago after graduating from the University of Maine at Farmington, where she was a standout player.

She also played for Roger Vachon at Cony, eventually replacing him when he stepped down after 23 seasons and seven Class A state championships.

DOGSLED RACING

Iditarod: Another former champion has taken the lead, as four-time winner Jeff King was the first musher into the Koyuk checkpoint, about 170 miles from the Nome finish line. The 57-year-old veteran pulled into Koyuk at 8:17 a.m. Monday, leaving just six minutes later.

Mitch Seavey, the 2004 winner, had been leading since Sunday and beat King to Koyuk by 34 minutes.

Algarve Cup: Facing former coach Pia Sundhage for the first time, the United States women came from behind at Lagos, Portugal, to tie Sweden 1-1 on Alex Morgan’s goal and advance to the final for the 10th time in 11 years.

TENNIS

BNP Paribas Open: Defending champion Roger Federer beat Ivan Dodig 6-3, 6-1 in a third-round match at Indian Wells, Calif. Federer notched his 890th career victory on the ATP Tour, joining Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and Guillermo Vilas as the only men to have won at least that many in the Open era.
