Teen, adult events at library

Events for April at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St., include:

Teen Opportunity Fair, April 13, 12-3 p.m. An afternoon for teens (age 13-17) to connect with local businesses and organizations that have summer opportunities (jobs, volunteering, internships) for their age group. The library will offer resume/application/professionalism information to teens. Some organizations participating include Westbrook-Gorham Chamber of Commerce, Animal Refuge League, United Way, Americorps, Cultivating Community (community farming group), Maine Youth Action Network. The library is still looking for/meeting with possible participants.

Introduction to Meditation is the third Saturday of the month, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., with Mo Bankey, certified Phoenix Rising yoga therapy practitioner.

Author Speaks Series, with Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte, Thursday, April 11, 7 p.m.

The Portland author of “Nowhere, a Story of Exile” is an Armenian refugee from Baku, Azerbaijan. After fleeing Baku, she and her family spent three difficult years in Armenia before coming to United States in 1992. In 2012 Anna published her book, titled “Nowhere, a Story of Exile,” which she wrote at the age of 14. The book is based on the childhood diaries she kept as a refugee from Baku. She is the president of the Maine Chapter of Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief. Turcotte is committed to writing and lecturing on topics that are dear to her heart.

Money Smart Week: Credit Repair & Management, Friday, April 26, 12-2 p.m., with Darryl Wright (or his assistant manager) from People’s United Bank.

Brush drop-off

at Public Services

Residents can drop off (no pick up) brush at the Public Services garage, 371 Saco St., April 16 through May 4, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. No contractor materials will be accepted. Biodegradable bagged leaves can be dropped off all summer until November. For more information, call 854-0660 or see www.westbrookmaine.com.

Rent a garden bed

Get your family and friends involved in a fun and healthy hobby – rent a raised bed at the Westbrook Community Center Community Gardens. Grow some vegetables for your family and friends, or donate your harvest to organizations in need, such as the Westbrook Community Food & Resource Center.

First-year membership is $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents. All renewals are $20. The fee for additional beds is $15 each.
