BRUNSWICK — Frank H. Carman, Cmdr., U.S. Coast Guard, retired, 79, died quietly Thursday, May 9, 2013. He suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Frank was born in Barberton, Ohio, Feb., 21, 1934, the son of Gertrude Young and Frank H. Carman Jr. Frank graduated from the University of Maryland and then entered the United States Coast Guard and attended Officers Candidate School at the Coast Guard Academy where he received his commission.

Frank served three years sea duty out of Portland, Maine, and Boston. Frank was next chosen for flight training in July 1961 and received Navy Wings and became a Coast Guard aviator in 1964. He flew Hu-16E at Elizabeth City, N.C., Bermuda and Mobile, Ala. He was designated Helicopter Pilot No. 719 and flew HH52As search and rescue in Kodiak, Alaska.

He retired in Brunswick. He also served as dockside manager at the Portland Yacht Club.

Frank is survived by his wife of 56 years, Florence Taff Carman; a sister, Marilyn Linard of Indianapolis; three children, Lynn Carman Whitley, DMD, and her husband Arnold, Anne Elizabeth Wagner-Moravick and her husband Ed; a son, Frank W. Carman; and a granddaughter, Ariel Wagner. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 16, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 330 Maine St., Brunswick.
