NEW GLOUCESTER — This year marks the sixth annual Shaker Meetinghouse and Francis Bliss Birthday Singing followed by the monthly first Sunday Portland Singing.

Singing will be Saturday, June 1, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the historic Shaker Meetinghouse at Sabbathday Lake. All singing session will use the “Sacred Harp,” 1991 Denson edition. Books will be available for loan or purchase.

This is the only active Shaker Community and they have offered the use of their building. This is a space that was built for singing. Those wishing to make a day of it may bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it on the grounds or come earlier to take a museum tour or visit the gift shop.

For more info about the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village check out www.shaker. lib.me.us/index.html. The first tour of the day begins at 10:30 a.m. and lasts approximately 75 minutes.

There will be a potluck meal after the Saturday singing. Please pack foods to keep them hot or cold as needed and mark dishes and serving utensils with name. Please have foods ready to serve because there will be no use of the Shaker kitchen.

At 6:30 p.m., the singing will move 10 minutes north to the Maine State Building in Poland.

On Sunday, the public is invited to worship with the Shaker Community at 10 a.m.

The Sunday, June 2, monthly Portland Singing will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the New Church, 302 Stevens Ave. in Portland.

Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is located on Route 26, approximately 8 miles north of Exit 63 of the Maine Turnpike in Gray, and 8 miles west of Exit 75 in Auburn.
