AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage says federal low-interest loans will be available to help people affected by a rash of apartment building fires in Lewiston.
Fires over a span of just over a week in late April and early May displaced nearly 200 people. Two 12-year-old boys have been charged with setting separate fires and several buildings have been razed.
LePage says the Small Business Administration has approved his request for emergency low-interest disaster loans, which will be made available to property owners, residents and other local businesses affected by the fires.
The SBA can provide loans of up to $200,000 to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.
