All three Mid-Coast schools are in the midst of playoff excitement.

Here’s a glimpse at what’s transpired and what’s to come.

Outdoor track

Brunswick and Mt. Ararat competed at the Class A state outdoor track and field meet in Brewer, while Morse ran, jumped and threw at the Class B meet in Bath Saturday as both venues featured sweltering conditions.

Brunswick’s boys were fifth in Class A with 41 points (Scarborough won with 89). Mt. Ararat had 4 to place 23rd. The Dragons were led by Alex Nichols, who won the 400 in a new record time of 48.58 seconds and also placed second in the 100 (11.32) and third in the 200 (23.16). Jamie Ross was runner-up in the 800 (1 minute, 55.99 seconds). The Eagles’ points came from Andrew McCracken (fourth in the pole vault, 12 feet, 6 inches).

In the girls’ meet, won by Bangor with 84 points, the Dragons tied Cony and Messalonskee for 11th with 23 points. The Eagles (19) came in 14th. Brunswick’s Allison Hill was runner-up in the 100 hurdles (15.46) and came in fifth in the 300 hurdles (49.18). Mt. Ararat featured a runner-up 400 relay (Lizzie O’Neal, Maddison Prescott, Nicole Ross and Olivia Swan), who had a time of 50.8 seconds, and a second-place 1,600 relay (same four girls, 4:15.21).

In Class B, Morse’s girls came in 17th with 11 points. Savanah Simmons-Grover tied for third in the high jump (4-10) and came in fourth in the javelin (104-2).

The Shipbuilders boys tied Cape Elizabeth and Lake Region for 24th place with 1 point, which came from Nate Stover, who was seventh in the mile (4:42.73).

Tennis

Brunswick girls’ tennis standout Maisie Silverman hoped to repeat as the state singles champion and rolled into the final with a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 5 Julia Brogan of Falmouth, but in the final, Silverman was bested by Falmouth’s Olivia Leavitt, seeded second, 1-6, 1-6.

Silverman and her team were going strong at press time. The Dragons, seeded second in Eastern A after a 12-0 regular season, blanked No. 7 Messalonskee, 5-0, and eliminatd No. 3 Brewer, 4-1, to reach the regional final where No. 4 Mt. Blue (11-3) awaited. If Brunswick, as expected, advanced, it will play either Portland (14-0) or Scarborough (13-1) in Saturday’s state match at the University of Maine in Orono.

No. 5 Mt. Ararat ended at 7-6 after a 3-2 quarterfinal round loss to Mt. Blue. The Morse girls, ranked ninth in Western B, were ousted by No. 8 Maranacook, 4-1, in the preliminary round and wound up 6-7.

On the boys’ side, top-ranked Brunswick survived its quarterfinal, 4-1, over No. 8 Skowhegan, then was upset, 4-1, by No. 4 Hampden Academy in the semis to finish 13-1. Mt. Ararat missed the playoffs at 2-10. In Western B, Morse was the No. 9 seed, but lost, 4-1, to No. 8 York in the preliminary round to finish 2-11.

Baseball

Morse’s baseball team enjoyed another superb season, finishing 12-4 after a 12-7 home win over Nokomis and a 4-0 loss at Camden Hills. The Shipbuilders earned the No. 3 seed for the Western Class B playoffs and hosted either No. 6 Cape Elizabeth (10-6) or No. 11 Oak Hill (8-8) in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Morse didn’t play either team this year. A win would either send the Shipbuilders to No. 2 Falmouth (14-2), the defending state champion, or allow them to stay home for a test from either No. 7 Maranacook (9-7) or No. 10 Poland (9-7). Morse won, 10-5, at the Black Bears to start the year. It did not face the Shipbuilders.

In Eastern A, Brunswick got the ninth and final spot after a 5-11 season. The Dragons closed with a 9-7 win at Mt. Ararat to set up a preliminary round date at No. 8 Brewer (6-10) in Tuesday’s preliminary round. The teams didn’t play in the regular season. If Brunswick advanced, it then played at No. 1 Oxford Hills (14-2) in the quarterfinals Thursday. The Dragons lost twice to the Vikings this season, 8-0, at home and 5-1 away.

Mt. Ararat fell short of the postseason after a 3-13 campaign left it 12th. The Eagles closed with a 7-1 setback at Mt. Blue and a 9-7 home loss to Brunswick last week.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team wound up where it so often has over the years, atop the Eastern A Heals, after an 11-1 regular season, culminated by a 13-6 win at St. Dom’s. The Dragons earned a bye into Saturday’s semifinals, where they will host either No. 4 Lewiston (8-4) or No. 5 Messalonskee (8-4). In the regular season, Brunswick split with the Blue Devils, winning, 12-4, at home and losing its lone game, 9-8, in OT, at Lewiston. The Dragons beat the Eagles twice, 11-8 at home and 13-7 away.

Mt. Ararat wound up third at 9-3 after closing with an 8-2 home win over Lewiston. The Eagles hosted No. 6 Deering (6-6) in the quarterfinals Tuesday. The teams don’t play in the regular season. If Mt. Ararat advanced, it would either go to No. 2 Cheverus (10-2) or host No. 7 Potland (3-9) in Saturday’s semifinals. The Eagles didn’t see either squad this spring.

In Eastern B, Morse went 9-3, good for fifth in the Heals. The Shipbuilders closed with a 19-3 home win over Lincoln Academy. Morse was at No. 4 Maranacook/Winthrop (10-2) for the quarterfinals Wednesday. The Shipbuilders lost the regular season meeting, 11-8, on the road. If Morse was able to advance, it would either go to No. 1 Gardiner (12-0) or host No. 8 Freeport (3-9) in Saturday’s semifinals. The Shipbuilders lost, 18-10, at the Tigers and fell to them at home, 12-9, in the regular season. They did not face the Falcons.

The regional finals are Wednesday, on the fields of the highest remaining seeds. The state games are Saturday, June 15, at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Girls’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s girls’ lacrosse team kept its long postseason streak alive, but it wasn’t easy, as the defending Eastern A champion Dragons earned the eighth and final spot after a 3-9 regular season. Brunswick went to top-ranked Messalonskee (12-0) for the quarterfinals Wednesday. The Dragons lost, 16-1 at home and 15-8 at the Eagles this season.

Mt. Ararat came in seventh at 6-6 following a season-ending 7-5 setback at Cony. The Eagles went to No. 2 Cheverus (9-3) for a quarterfinal Wednesday. The teams don’t play in the regular season.

In Eastern B, Morse wound up fourth with a 7-5 mark after closing with an 18-9 loss at Messalonskee. The Shipbuilders hosted No. 5 Camden Hills (6-6) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Morse split two close games with the Windjammers in the regular season, losing, 12-10, at home and winning, 17-15, in Camden. The winner advanced to meet No. 1 Gardiner (9-3) in Saturday’s semifinals. The Shipbuilders lost twice to the Tigers this spring, 14-7, there and 16-12 at home.

The regional finals are Wednesday, on the fields of the highest remaining seeds. The state games are Saturday, June 15, at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Softball

All three softball teams fell short of the playoffs this spring, with Mt. Ararat coming the closest.

The Eagles went 6-10 (closing with an 11-5 victory at Mt. Blue and a 20-1 home win over Brunswick, but that wasn’t enough as they finished 10th in the Eastern Class A Heal Points standings and only nine teams qualified.

The Dragons finished 0-16 and 14th in the region after closing with the 20-1 loss at Mt. Ararat.

Morse went 3-13 and 16th in Western B (where just 12 teams made the cut). The Shipbuilders closed with a 6-4 home win over Nokomis and a 10-1 loss at Camden Hills.
