MINNEAPOLIS – Vernon Wells drove in three runs, and the New York Yankees pounded rookie Kyle Gibson and the Minnesota Twins 9-5 on Thursday to finish a four-game sweep.

Travis Hafner had three hits and scored twice, and Ichiro Suzuki had a two-run triple among his three hits for the Yankees, who scored 29 runs in the series.

Justin Morneau homered twice for the Twins. But Gibson (1-1) gave up 11 hits, a walk, a hit by pitch and eight runs in 51/3 innings with two strikeouts in his second start.

David Phelps (6-5) surrendered Morneau’s first homer and three more runs in the seventh, when he left with one out. RBI singles by Pedro Florimon and Brian Dozier, and a sacrifice fly by Joe Mauer helped the Twins catch up in that inning, and Morneau went deep again in the eighth.

WHITE SOX 3, ORIOLES 2: Adam Dunn hit a one-out homer in the bottom of the ninth inning off Tommy Hunter to give host Chicago a win over Baltimore.

RAYS 7, ASTROS 5: Yunel Escobar got three hits and drove in three runs, including a tiebreaking double in the 11th inning that sent Tampa Bay to a victory at Houston.

TIGERS 11, BLUE JAYS 1: Justin Verlander pitched seven shutout innings, Austin Jackson hit a two-run homer and Detroit won at Toronto.

Jackson went 4 for 5 with a walk and scored four times as the Tigers pounded 16 hits.

ROYALS 10, INDIANS 7: Lorenzo Cain hit his first career grand slam, Salvador Perez provided a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning and host Kansas City rallied over Cleveland after trailing 5-0 early.

Cain’s slam and a solo shot by George Kottaras tied it in the sixth. The Indians regained the lead on Carlos Santana’s two-run double in the seventh, but the Royals answered in the bottom half on a two-run homer by Eric Hosmer.

RANGERS 5, MARINERS 4: Adrian Beltre homered twice and host Texas used a four-run seventh inning to beat Seattle.

PHILLIES 6, PIRATES 4: Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings, Carlos Ruiz hit a tiebreaking single and Philadelphia beat Gerrit Cole and host Pittsburgh.

NATIONALS 8, BREWERS 5: Wilson Ramos returned from the disabled list to drive in five runs, and Washington won at home.

MARLINS 4, BRAVES 3: Donovan Solano delivered a pinch-hit, go-ahead single off Braves closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning, and Miami won at Atlanta.

ROCKIES 9, DODGERS 5: Michael Cuddyer hit a solo homer and drove in three runs to help host Colorado beat Los Angeles.

GIANTS-REDS: Postponed because of rain.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, METS 4: Cliff Pennington hit an RBI single with two outs in the 15th inning and Arizona, boosted early by Gerardo Parra’s bunt double, finally outlasted the Mets in a back-and-forth classic in New York.

INTERLEAGUE PLAY

ATHLETICS 1, CUBS 0: Derek Norris scored on a passed ball with two outs in the seventh inning, and host Oakland defeated Chicago.

He also put the tag on Starlin Castro trying to score, threw out a runner at second and called Dan Straily’s best game as a major league pitcher.
