TOGUS — Anthony “Tony” Raymond Soper, 41, of Kimberly Circle, Brunswick, passed surrounded by family and loved ones on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Togus Veterans Medical Center in Augusta, Maine, after a courageous, odds-defying sevenyear battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was born in Flint, Michigan, on December 11, 1971, the son of Harold and Joyce Soper.

Tony grew up in Fenton, Michigan and attended Fenton schools where he played football and wrestled until he enlisted into the United States Army where he served honorably until his discharge in 1990. Tony then returned to Michigan working various jobs while he attended school at Mott Community College and in 1991 graduated a Certified Nurses Assistant.

In 1992 Tony set out on a spontaneous and destined trek that landed him in Brunswick, Maine which he would go on to make his forever home. In November 1993 fate would lead Tony to the love of his life, Judy. They were married on September 2nd, 1995 joining their lives as one for eternity. Shortly after his arrival in Maine, Tony began his career as a commercial lobster fisherman. He continued to work the waters of New England until 2006 when his ALS diagnosis would force him to retire early. It was during this proud career he amassed a love for the sea that would remain with him for the rest of his days.

Tony enjoyed fishing, golfing, and exploring anything new. But more than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family … he literally lived for family and loved ones, Tony referred to this as “Livin’ the dream.” He loved his espresso, and though always willing to try a new place, his loyalty was home in Brunswick at the “Bo-Ho,” where he became and remained a familiar face for nearly twenty years.

After being diagnosed with ALS, like anything that was important in his life, Tony became passionate, and committed to it. He quickly became an ambassador for those afflicted with this terrible disease, and a warrior, aggressive in the fight to find the cause and cure, battling to the very end. His unwavering commitment and generosity were part of what defined Tony his entire life and were evidenced even in his passing as he continued to give, donating his brain and spine to ALS research. His final contribution to the fight in finding cause and cure … so others could go on “Livin’ the dream.”

A special thanks to Dr. Richardson and his assistant Cathy, and all the dedicated staff who cared for him at Togus Veterans Medical Center; Dr. Staley, Judy Gillman, and all the staff at the SCI clinic; and home care professionals who have become part of our family.

Tony was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Soper. Surviving is his wife Judy; daughter Crystal Kurotori, husband Alan, and grandchildren (already missing their “Papa T”) Alex, Logan, and Annika of San Jose, California; son Jeff Hurd of Waldoboro, Maine; father Harold Soper of Montrose, Michigan; brothers Dan Soper of Fenton, Michigan; Jeff Soper of Haslett, Michigan; Brian Soper of Spotsylvania, Virginia and sister Kelly Hodges of Montrose, Michigan. He is also survived by nieces Christina Florian, Megan Hodges, and Chelsea Soper, and nephews Joseph Soper, Michael Soper, and Brison Soper.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, August 3rd from 2- 4PM at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, where a celebration of his life will follow at 4PM. Burial in Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery will be held at a later date.
