Lobster Dinner

Windham Kiwanis is hosting their annual “Lobstah” dinner on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Little Meeting House in North Windham at Boody’s Corner. The menu includes lobster, corn on the cob, coleslaw, chips, beverages and more. Cost is $15 per person and tickets can be purchased from any Kiwanian, at the door or by calling 892-3684.

Tea For You @ the Library

VFW Meets

Windham VFW Post 10643 will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. at Windham Veterans Center. Supper will start at 5 p.m. followed by the meeting. Windham Veterans Center is located behind Windham Mall (Hannaford’s). Take Veterans Memorial Drive by Friendly’s and follow to the end.

Free Community Meal

On Saturday, Aug. 31, a free community meal will be served at Christ Chapel, 37 Northern Pines Road off Route 85 near Crescent Lake, Raymond. The meal is open to all ages from the surrounding communities. Menu is chicken and rice soup, casseroles, salads and desserts and will be continually served, buffet style from 4:30-6 p.m.

Bingo

Like Bingo? Every Tuesday through Oct. 29, the Standish Memorial Post 128 American Legion holds Bingo at the Windham Veterans Center. Doors open at 4 p.m., Bingo at 6:30 p.m., refreshments available. WTA pull tabs. For more information, call 642-5583.

Help for Vets

On Aug. 14 and Aug. 28, Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay is available at the Windham Veterans Center, as she is on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month, from 9 a.m. until noon. She assists veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed. The Veterans Center is in North Windham, off Route 302, in back of the Windham Mall. Watch for the signs.

Hospice Volunteer Training

Hospice volunteers are always needed. A special 20-hour training is being offered by Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) to prepare volunteers to provide companionship, caregiver respite and practical non-medical help. Training is available beginning Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for the next three Fridays at the VNA Home Health Hospice, 50 Foden Road, South Portland. A pre-training interview is required. New Medicare Seminar

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham.

A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions and to help you enroll.

In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Please call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Steamboats on Sebago

Learn all about the days when steamboats were a necessary part of the transportation and travel industries in the Sebago Lake towns. On Monday, Aug. 26, Windham Historical Society presents a public program at 7 p.m. at Windham Veterans Center, with thorough description and many photographs. Refreshments available and time for Q&A. Help the Horses!

New England’s largest horse shelter, the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, invites everyone to attend a presentation by Nick Buck. Skyline Farm and the Maine Driving Club have scheduled a talk by Nick and his brother, Rinker, who will share their adventures, which occurred on a 2,000 mile journey along the Oregon Trail in a mule-powered covered wagon. The presentation will take place at the Skyline Farm Visitors’ Center at 95 The Lane, North Yarmouth, on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. A suggested donation of $5 per person will benefit the MSSPA’s annual Buy a Bale fund raising campaign.
