AUGUSTA — Produce growers and packers in Maine are being given a chance to learn more about a new food safety rules being proposed by the federal government.

State agricultural officials say the Food Safety Modernization Act signed into law in 2011 is the most comprehensive federal reform of food regulation in more than 70 years. Agriculture Commissioner Walt Whitcomb says the new rules will mean big changes in how Maine produce growers and packers operate to prevent food contamination.

A session is being held Monday to provide information about the rules and answer questions. The meeting is taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Augusta State Armory.

The Food and Drug Administration’s comment period on the rule ends Nov. 15.
