WESTBROOK – After two lopsided losses, Westbrook finally ran its plays right.

And right at Falmouth.

Tailback Collin Joyce ran for 152 yards and three touchdowns and caught a pass for another score, and fullback Kyle Heath ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns as Westbrook rolled to a 44-22 win in a Western Class B football game Friday night at Olmstead Field.

“It was real important to come out ready to go,” Heath said. “We wanted to play physical because the last few weeks we haven’t been playing to our full potential.”

The Blue Blazes dominated the line Friday, forcing two fumbles on the Yachtsmen’s first two possessions to build a 24-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game.

Westbrook took the opening kickoff 65 yards on five plays for an 8-0 lead just 2:08 into the game, when Heath pounded in from the 9-yard line. Joyce ran for the 2-point conversion.

Falmouth fumbled on its first play from scrimmage, giving the Blazes the ball on the Falmouth 29.

Joyce danced his way through the Yachtsmen defense for a 25-yard gain, then scored on a 2-yard dive and ran for conversion for a 16-0 lead.

“It wasn’t a matter of physicality on the line, it was a matter of mentality,” Joyce said. “Tonight, the guys up front decided to run our (plays) right.”

Falmouth again fumbled on the first play of its next possession, giving Westbrook the ball on the Yachtsmen’s 34. Freshman quarterback Baily Sawyer, making his second start of the season, hit Joyce for a 34-yard touchdown pass.

Joyce ran for the conversion. Westbrook led 24-0 with 9:03 left in the first quarter.

“They came out after two losses and decided they can’t lose again. They plain beat us,” Falmouth Coach John Fitzsimmons said. “Those (turnovers on) the two initial plays were a morale breaker for a young team still trying to learn. This is football. We’ll get back at it Monday and get ready for Fryeburg. We’ll learn from this.”

Westbrook (3-2) limited Falmouth (3-2) to three-and-out and began another march up the field. Falmouth defensive back Cal Inlow picked off Sawyer’s screen pass and ran it about 40 yards to the Westbrook 19.

Five plays later Tyler Rolfe scored on an 8-yard run. Noah Nelson passed to Justin Rogers for the conversion to make it 24-8 with 1:34 left in the quarter.

That’s as close as the Yachtsmen would get. Joyce added touchdown runs of 2 and 15 yards, and Heath scored on a 32-yard run. Falmouth scored twice more against Westbrook’s reserves in the fourth quarter. Nico Cariolo scored on a 1-yard run and Lucas Pushor hit Austin Wheeler with a 10-yard TD pass.

“I thought our defense came out really fired up tonight, they were able to generate a couple of turnovers and our offense was able to take advantage of them,” Westbrook Coach Jeff Guerette said.

“It was a great start. After the last couple of weeks, we really needed that.”
