Midway ride operator jailed after five injured in falls

An amusement ride operator is in jail after investigators say someone tampered with a ride at the North Carolina State Fair and compromised safety devices.

Timothy Dwayne Tutterrow of Quitman, Ga., faces three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He operated the ride when five people were hurt Thursday. Tutterrow is due in court Monday. His attorney said Sunday that Tutterrow is devastated by what happened.

WakeMed hospital spokesman Thomas Morris said three people remained in the Raleigh hospital Sunday after the ride on the state fair’s midway suddenly jolted into gear as people were exiting, dropping some riders from what eyewitnesses estimated to be 20 or 30 feet in the air.

He said the dead include 14 women, three men and a child. Ensafi said the blast wounded five women, two of whom were in critical condition.

Authorities released details Sunday from a weekend shooting attack that left four family members and two dogs dead at a central Phoenix townhouse before the gunman turned the weapon on himself.

Michael Guzzo, 56, killed his next door neighbors in a confrontation Saturday that may have been touched off by loud barking, police said.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said there is “some indication that perhaps that was a problem.” But he added that because of the deaths, a motive may never be known.

The victims have been identified as Bruce Moore, 66; his daughter, Renee Moore, 36; her husband, who took his wife’s name, Michael Moore, 42; and Renee’s son, Shannon Moore, 17.

After the killings, Guzzo shot at another townhouse before returning to his unit and killing himself, police said.
