Prior to the recent joint VFW and American Legion bean supper, American Legion Post 148 of Windham recognized individuals who have contributed significantly to the support of the post and local veterans. Recipients of certificates of appreciation, presented by soon-to-be-installed American Legion commander Mel Greenier, included:

• Valerie Strout, of Maine Flag and Banner in North Windham. Strout provides a collection point for flags that are no longer serviceable and turns them over to the Legion Post for proper disposal. She has also been very supportive of the Legion Americanism programs.

• Bryant McMakin, the manager of the North Windham Home Depot, has been in the news lately for his support and upgrade of Legion facilities in the local area. Bryant provided the veterans center with stone pavers to complete their summer Memorial Garden project and is currently exploring other projects for the Veteran’s Center.

• Sherma Moody, manager of North Windham Wal-Mart has been instrumental in the Legion’s Memorial Day food drives in support of the local food pantry. She has been very supportive of many other veterans’ projects.

Also, certificates of Legion Post membership longevity were awarded to: Tarry Ladd, 20 years of service; Leonard Sanborn, 25 years; John Rollins, 26 years; Michael Swartz, 28 years; Richard Mitchell, 30 years; Roger Timmons, 34 years; and Don Rogers, 55 years of service to the post including several tours as Commander.

Master of Ceremonies David Tanguay noted that Post 148 had more than 1,145 cumulative years of service among all the 101 members of the Field-Allen Post with most of the Post members being involved for less than 10 years.

Following the recognition ceremony, the two posts hosted a public bean supper and silent auction with more than 120 in attendance. Proceeds from the supper will go to the posts’ veterans support funds.

Among many to receive awards at a recent ceremony to honor community partners and long-serving members of the American Legion Post 148 was Don Rogers of Windham, who has been a member of the post for 55 years. Handing out the certificate is soon-to-be-installed American Legion commander Mel Greenier.
